The “Affordable Adventures” module was developed as part of an app to support recent college graduates who were starting to build their adult lives. The module focuses on the relocation aspect of this app, although I also supported the budgeting, professional development, and finding community projects.
Initially, I had planned to develop a full course guiding learners through the entire process of creating a budget for relocation. However, when the app’s release timeline was shortened to only a few weeks, I pivoted to developing a singular module instead of the full course, allowing me to deliver a polished and comprehensive final product.
The module topic I selected was how to consider the financial impacts of various logistical decisions one has to make while moving. With the target audience being recent college graduates, I tailored the content of the module for individuals who had never relocated by themselves before. For this reason, I selected three focus areas for the module: moving your car, setting up your new residence, and getting furniture.
These may seem like obvious considerations for adults who have moved before, but they are easily looked over or not fully understood by those who have never relocated by themselves. I then created a simple visual flow diagram demonstrating these three logistical decisions and the possible choices that can be made for each decision.
With a clear understanding of what the module would cover and how each section was connected, I began developing a visual storyboard for the module. The learner moves through the module in sections, taking personalized quizzes about each focus area that recommend them the best choice based on their answers.
Everyone’s circumstances are different, especially post-graduation, so creating branching scenarios that provided personalized results was the best format for considering all personal situations. The visual storyboard reflects these personalized paths, demonstrating how each section asks specific questions and how each answer choice is mapped to one of the final decisions.
After designing each screen that the learner would see and writing copy for the entire module, I began developing the final product in Microsoft PowerPoint. I selected PowerPoint because of the developer capabilities that Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) provides, which enabled me to write macros that keep track of learners’ answers and display the correct final decision based on learners’ choices.
The graphics of the module are animated to create a lighthearted feeling within the module because relocation can be a highly stressful experience. The color scheme of the module consists of orange, which is indicative of change and energy, and green, which reflects the financial focus of the module.
Including interactive components in this module empowers learners to take an active approach to their learning, and to holistically consider the impacts of these logistical decisions on their relocation budgets and personal circumstances.
